Orange County Personal Trainer Answers Whether Machines Or Free Weights Are Better

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

I can’t believe people still ask me this question all the time.  I must get asked this question at least once a day.  And I am tired of explaining to these people which apparatus is better and delivers the best results. So, I am just going to spill my guts today and finally put an end to the debate of which is better, free weights or machines.

Being an Orange County Personal Trainer, I have worked with many people, both men and women, young and old, helping them drop fat and tone their muscles.  I guess you can say I have a great track recored.  So, from my experience and vast education, nothing comes close to free weights, when it comes to getting a tough workout that promotes fat loss and tone muscles.

You see, machines make things easier on your body, that is why people like machines.  With machines, you don’t have to work about balancing the weights, which takes your stabilizer muscles out of it. So, if your stabilizer muscles don’t grow, the rest of your body will stop.  And that also hurts your fat loss.

Free weights challenge you so much more, making you balance the weight.  You will burn more calories and get a much more intense workout with free weights.

That’s the end of the argument.

Machines or Free Weights? Which is Better?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

You hear all the time, “should I use machine or free weights?”  Some people think machines are better than free weights in developing the body and losing body fat.  And there are others that will argue that point, saying free weights are better.  Well, I am going to put an end to that argument once and for all.  Nothing compares to free weights.

Free weights have so many benefits that machines do not.  First, lifting free weights are much more difficult than using machines.  That means you will be working your muscles more with free weights than with machines, giving you greater gains and more calorie burning.

Second, free weights work your stabilizer muscles, the muscles that give you your balance.  Machines do not.  So, free weights will improve your overall balance and increase your muscle size and strength much more and faster than machines.  Actually, with machines, you are very limited on how much muscle and strength you can gain.  With free weights, you are not.

There you have it.  There is no comparison between free weights and machines.  If you want to increase your metabolism, burn more calories, really re-sculpt your body, increase your strength and muscle, than you better start lifting some free weights, and watch your body make amazing results in a short period of time.

Yours in good health,
